Smith also had a total of 4 passing TDs and they upset the Patriots. The Chiefs starting safety also went out with an achilles injury. He is expected to be out for the season. The final score was 42-27 Kansas City.

Silver Lining in Loss Against Sacred Heart
By Trevor Madison
September 22, 2017
Even though the Cardinals lost against Sacred Heart, there are a few silver linings. Jacob Powelson turned in another solid passing performance, going 21/31 for 377 yards and four touchdowns. That performance rocketed Jacob Powelson into first place in yards passing from all of 8-man quarterbacks, totaling 1,067 total yards over the course of the season. The game was also a non-conference game, so North Andrew still has the opportunity to win the GRC Championship. Also, the Cardinals will now likely get the second seed in districts, with Mound City likely receiving the first seed. Mound City is undefeated this season, and has a much easier schedule the rest of the season. It is potentially better that the Cardinals will play the district championship on the road. MSHSAA rule says that if the Cardinals play on the road in the district championship, if the one seed from district 1 wins the district, then the Cardinals have the state semi-final at home. Even though the loss to Sacred Heart was a crushing blow for the football program, it could have been a blessing in disguise.

Streak of 48 Consecutive Regular Season Wins Comes to a Close
By Trevor Madison
September 22, 2017
North Andrew’s unbeaten streak in the regular season came to a close last Friday. North Andrew had not lost in the regular season in the last 48 games, which began during the 2011 season. Finally, the streak came to a close when North Andrew fell to Sacred Heart 88-48.
The game started an hour late because North Andrew’s bus blew out a tire on the way to the game, and was forced to pull over on the side of the road for 37 minutes until another bus came. After that, the new bus was caught in heavy traffic and came to a standstill various times. North Andrew finally arrived at Sacred Heart around 6:45pm.
Sacred Heart’s offense was unstoppable as the Gremlins totalled 519 yards and 12 touchdowns in the Cardinals loss. The game was back and forth at the start, at the end of the first quarter, the game was tied at 14. However, in the second quarter the Gremlins pulled away outscoring the Cardinals 31-6. After a successful drive, a safety, and another score, the Gremlins scored 18 points in only 23 seconds. North Andrew was down 20-45 at the half.
The Gremlins never looked back, scoring 44 points in the second half and running away with the game. The final score was 88-48 Sacred Heart. Cardinals running back,Gus Shunk, was injured during the first drive and did not play in the rest of the game. Shunk is questionable for next week against Stanberry. Also, Hunter Grimes was hurt in the beginning of the second quarter, tearing his meniscus, MCL, and possibly his ACL. Grimes is expected to be out for at least 6 weeks, if not the whole season. North Andrew will play against unbeaten Stanberry next week.

Cardinal defeat Lions
By: Trevor Madison
September 1, 2017
North Andrew opened the season last Friday against St. Joseph Christian. North Andrew jumped out to an early lead with a 5 yard pass from Jacob Powelson to Caleb Patterson. The flood-gates only opened from there, the Cardinals scored 36 more unanswered points to jump out to an early lead before a Ben Craven 53 yard pass right before halftime gave the Cardinals a 44-6 lead at the break. North Andrew opened the second half much like the first half with another Jacob Powelson pass to Caleb Patterson for 3 yards. However, the lions started scoring through the air at an alarming rate. St. Joseph Christian outscored the Cardinals 20-14 in the second half but the Cardinals were too strong for the lions taking the game 58-26. Jacob Powelson passed for a career high 305 yards with 6 touchdowns. DeLong and Patterson were forces in the air that led to the Cardinal win combining for 289 yards and 5 touchdowns. North Andrew quarterback, Jacob Powelson, had this to say about last Friday’s game, “We came out strong and then towards the latter part of the second quarter we stumbled over our feet a bit and in the second half we hit a few rough patches but we still came out pretty strong.” North Andrew will play next week against unbeaten Pattonsburg.

Playoff Implications of Canceled Game
By: Trevor Madison
September 1, 2017
The Cardinals move to 1-0 on the season after defeating St. Joseph Christian on Friday. Week 1’s game was forfeited by King City after the tragic loss of a king city student the night before. According to King City sports writer Mat Pearl the Cardinals out of respect for the wildcats, rejected the forfeit. Pearl said “The Cardinal’s [administration] did not accept the forfeit and MSHSAA ruled [the game] as a non-contest.”
Many people are wondering how this will affect North Andrew’s conference and district standings. This is not an immediate threat to North Andrew’s standings. The district seeds are determined by a complex mathematical formula in which everything is divided by games played. The only loss for the Cardinals is that the loss of strength of schedule since King City is projected to be a force in 8-man football this season by being projected 9th by the 8-man coaches association polls. However, the Cardinals could be potentially hurt for Conference Standings. If the Cardinals go undefeated in the regular season, then the Cardinals will win the conference no matter what happens. However, if the Cardinals lose to a GRC opponent that has the same record then the Cardinals will lose the conference title because of head to head losses. The only way that not playing in week one would come back to bite the Cardinals, is if North Andrew loses to a conference opponent but that team loses to another conference team. If all three teams have the same number of losses then North Andrew would lose the conference. You can check the district standings at www.mshsaa.org and conference standings at www.grandriverconference.org

North Andrew won their first game of the year against Worth County 14-3 despite having lost to Worth County 7-4 earlier in the season. Atheah Roberts led the way offensively against Worth County going 2-3 with a double, a walk, an RBI, and two runs scored. Arial Rutherford gave a strong pitching performance for North Andrew pitching 6 innings, giving up on 1 hit, no walks, striking out 5, and conceding only one earned run. North Andrew then lost to a very strong Albany team in the Stanberry Tournament Consolation game. However, North Andrew bounced back against Northeast Nodaway winning 13-3. North Andrew led 4-3 after the 2nd, 7-3 after the 4th, and finally North Andrew slammed the door in the 5th scoring 5 runs for a final score of 13-3. Arial Rutherford led the way for North Andrew going 2-4 with a double, a triple, 3 runs scored, and 2 RBIs. Rutherford also put in a dominant pitching performance pitching 5 innings, giving up 2 hits, walking none, only giving up 1 earned run, and striking out 6. Commenting on the quick bounce back from a rock start to the season, Coach Simmons said this, “Our hitting has gotten better as the season has progressed. The first time we played Worth County we didn’t hit the ball as well. The second time when we hit it harder they made errors instead of outs. We are more driven then we were at the start of the year. We now have a goal of one error per game and the girls have really embraced that.” The Lady Cardinals will attempt to keep the wins coming with four games in the next week.
