Who is Alfie Evans and What is his story?
By: Morgan Messer
Alfie Evans is a baby boy born in the UK with a degenerative brain condition. His health was thought to be fine from his birth in May 2016 until December 2016. Then he started experiencing seizures and was admitted to the hospital where he has stayed since. He has been on life support to assist with his breathing as he is in a semi-vegetative state. Doctors believe that withdrawing life support is in his best interest but his parents believe a doctor in Rome at the Bambino Gesu Hospital in Rome would be able to perform a series of operation to assist in his breathing and to keep him alive.
Michael Mylonas, a representative of the hospital in which Alfie is at has said the following “One of the problems of this case is they [Alfie's parents] look at him and, barring the paraphernalia of breathing and feeding, he's a sweet, lovely, normal-looking boy who opens his eyes, [and] will smile”. Now Alfie’s parents have embarked on a lengthy legal battle that has lasted since December 19, 2017. It was ruled Monday, April 23, 2018 that the child’s life support should be turned off and since then he has been breathing unassisted. It is unknown at this point what will happen but his parents are still holding on to hope that permission will be granted for them to take their son to Italy to help prolong his life.

Senioritis
By: Morgan Messer
The definition of senioritis is ‘a supposed affliction of students in their final year of high school or college, characterized by a decline in motivation or performance’. With less than a month until North Andrew seniors’ last day of high school, many are lacking energy to continue school work. Hence the excessive use of the term senioritis. Some seniors are incredibly excited for the last semester of high school and others not so much. A lot of people in their last semester of high school begin to feel irritated towards classmates you’ve been able to tolerate for the last 4 years. Some of the seniors I talked to during our cap and gown pictures all said the same thing, “I just can’t wait to get out of here”.
Grades can start to drop as well as attendance. This can even affect college acceptances and the amount of financial aid you can recieve if your grades drop. A great way to avoid letting senioritis affect you is by setting small goals to keep yourself active. You can also try different ways to relax like reading your favorite book or occasionally taking a nap. If you push yourself that last semester senioritis won’t be able to get to you. Congratulations seniors.

Prom: Dancing, Dresses, and Dates
By: Morgan Messer
Prom is short for promenade and has been a staple in teenagers lives for a long time. The long standing tradition of prom has been going on since the early 20th century. It is possible though that proms have been happening in colleges since the 19th century. Prom used to just be a dance that included tea where students wore their sunday best clothes.
“Prom has all the elements of a popular story. It reeks of all-Americanness, tension, drama. It has romance. Pretty dresses. Dancing. Limos. High school. Coming of age.” Adora Svitak. The culture of teenagers grew stronger than ever in the 1940s and by the 1950s and 60s the prom’s location changed from a school gym to a ballroom.
What has also grown is the tradition of the ‘promposal’. The elaborate act didn’t start going mainstream until 2002-2005. Asking someone to prom has grown from a small act to something elaborate and romantic. For example, Jacob Powelson came into Gentry Copple’s first hour, presenting her with a poster board and a cup of coffee asking her to be his date to prom. My boyfriend surprised me with 5 pieces of poster board cut out into letters spelling out prom. From the time it has begun to now, prom will no doubt become more elaborate. Prom at North Andrew is April 28th, so don’t forget.

National School Walkout: What you need to know
By: Morgan Messer
Ever since the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, the discussion of guns and what use they have has been on the rise. In the United States, on March 14th, at 10:00 a.m, students participating walked out of school and peacefully protested for 17 minutes in honor of the 17 lives lost in the Parkland shooting. The walkout was open to anyone. The idea came about by EMPOWER, the youth version of the Women’s March. It was the people’s way of saying enough is enough. They were simply protesting gun violence and the effects it has had on our lives. I talked to Mrs. Shunk about what she though. “I think students need to educate themselves more and do more research about it. We have the right to bare arms and there shouldn’t be if, ands, or buts about it.”
Vera Eidelman, from the American CIvil Liberties Union, shared what schools could and couldn’t do in response to students who participated in the protest. “Schools could punish students if they miss class, even if they're joining the walkout. But what the school can't do," Eidelman said, "is discipline students more harshly because they are walking out to express a political view or because school administrators don't support the views behind the protest."
Everyone deserves to learn in an environment where they don’t need to worry about being gunned down. Many of us don’t feel safe in our schools anymore. For years we’ve fought for the right to have a safe education and now we’re back to fighting. Parents deserve to be able to send their student to school in the morning and see them come home alive. “Congress must take meaningful action to keep us safe and pass federal gun reform legislation that address the public health crisis of gun violence.” That is what this walkout was about.

23rd Olympic Games
By: Morgan Messer
The Winter Olympics have been going on since 1924, when they were held in Chamonix, France. The modern Olympic games were inspired by the ancient Olympic games. The only time the games were interrupted was during World War 2. The 2018 Winter Olympic games were held in Pyeongchang, South Korea. A grand total of 2,930 athletes were participants in this year’s games. Many medals were awarded to many different countries. Norway earned the most by winning 39 medals. Germany earned 31, Canada 29, the U.S.A 23, and the Netherlands 20.
I spoke to Maria Messer about her thoughts on this year’s games. She said “I was quite disappointed with the turnout of the figure skating routines.” Usually Maria Messer looks forward to it and she said she was expecting something more exciting than what was delivered. She did happen to mention that her favorite event by far was the bobsledders.any people can agree with her on that point. The most exciting part of the bobsledding for her was when the ladies would run and jump in the bobsled at the beginning. The next Olympic games will be the summer games to be held in Tokyo, Japan in 2020.

Inside the Grammys
By: Morgan Messer
Once known as the Gramophone, the Grammys are a long standing tradition of an awards ceremony to recognize the very best in music. Celebrities from all over gather to celebrate each other’s work. It has been happening since the first ceremony in 1959. There has been a total of 60 award ceremonies for celebrities. The famous award show is held every year at many lavish places. It is presented by The Recording Academy.
There are mixed feelings about it. Many consider it to be a fixed show. Others love to celebrate the achievement of many people in diverse career fields. “Being acknowledged for your work is always a great accomplishment, whether it's people in my city, kids in the street, all the way up to the Grammys.” -Kendrick Lamar. There are different categories you can win a Grammy in but the general field are 4 awards not restricted by genre. They are album of the year, record of the year, song of the year, and best new artist.
The 60th annual Grammys award show presented a great turnout. "Let's work together, women and men, as a united music industry committed to creating more safe work environments, equal pay, and access for all women." - Janelle Monae. It was held in New York at Madison Square Garden. Some of the winners were Bruno Mars for example. He won album of the year. He also won song of the year and album of the year. Alessia Cara won best new artist. It is a long standing tradition that will surely continue for a very long time.

Chelsea Manning Takeover of the Senate
By: Morgan Messer
Chelsea Manning was born as Bradley Manning. For years she had no clue of who she was including her gender identity. Her father convinced her to join the Army and that is when many things started to go wrong. Chelsea Manning is known for her leak of many classified documents to wikileaks. She was in the United States Army as an Intelligence Analyst.
When she was stationed with her unit in Iraq in 2009, she had access to highly classified data. When it was made known that she was suffering from major depression and anxiety, it was still deemed fit for her to have access to such important information. She shared with online friend Adrian Lamo of her actions where she leaked classified data. After she made the decision to release so many documents, Manning was arrested. She was ultimately charged with 22 offenses and held in Quantico, Virginia and held in solitary confinement. “The evidence is overwhelming that it should be deemed as such: solitary confinement in the U.S. is arbitrary, abused, and unnecessary in many situations. It is cruel, degrading, and inhumane and is effectively a 'no touch' torture.” She did not think that the way she was held was fair.
Her sentence was shortened in the last days of Barack Obama. After that she was released in 2017 after serving only 7 years. In 2018 she announced her candidacy to run for senate from her home state of Maryland. She is a criminal and if she wins her run for senate, how can we know that she will not repeat her crimes?

Fifth and Sixth Grade Scholar Bowl Make Smart Look Good
By: Hunter Grimes
October 24, 2017
They say that it's better to teach them when they're younger. This was a decent season the for the North Andrew 5th and 6th grade scholar bowl team. The team finished with a 7-8 record on the season with having 3 high achievers on the team for the year. For this year Jed Donahoo earned Rookie of the Year, with him scoring 19 on the year. Trey Mcdaniel was given MVP, or Most Valuable Player, because he scored 31 on the year which was huge for the team. Trey was an essential academic, that spiked the points up for the team with his quick buzzing and skillful answering system.
Their captains were Ryanna Hatfield, and Trey McDaniel, they really helped keep the team together. In all this was a pretty great year for the 5th-6th grade scholar bowl team. Coach Mr. Wiedmer stated that this was a really fun year with a great group of kids. We struggled in the 2nd quarter a lot this year, so that hurt us in the overall standings. We didn’t get the trophy we were hoping for, but they are all winners in my heart. I hope the kids continue to be part of the scholar bowl teams here at North Andrew in middle and high school.”

The Cardinal Marching Season
By: Jaiden Wheat
October 23, 2017
The Marching Cardinals under the direction of Mr. Steven Till had another successful season this year. The drum majors this year are Jaden Bowmen and Faith Atkins. This is Jaden’s first year as drum major, and Faith’s second. The Marching Cardinals got to experience new Competitions this season including Carrollton Band day for the first time ever. The Marching Cardinals began their season on September 24th in Carrollton, Iowa. The band placed 8th in marching.
At Carrollton, the Cardinals also showed off the drumline for their first ever competition. “The Drumline knows how to keep a good rhythm and without it, the band wouldn’t succeed” says drumline member Patty Greever. The Drumline this year consists of Emily Cole, Nicholas Taylor, Dylan Messick, Brody Herbert, Jade Herbert, Logan Wilmes, Dawson Mercer, Nicholas Crets, Corban Warren, Kyrsten Thomas, Ryan Coats JT Greever, and Patty Greever.
Their next competition was held on September 30, in Clarinda, Iowa at the South West Iowa Jamboree. The Marching Cardinals earned recognition at Clarinda, the Cardinals earned 7th place out of 20 bands.
Director Stephen Till had this to say about the season, “It was definitely a unique experience for us getting out and trying the waters at Carrollton and Trenton. Our Drum line really enjoyed the experience, and I think our students enjoyed the new atmosphere’s as well. We’re already looking forward to next season.” The Marching Cardinals just wrapped up their season at the Trenton, Missouri Band Day. Unfortunately the marching band did not compete because of impending bad weather. The drumline however, took their routine and got to show it off one last time for this year. Overall the marching season was a mix of new experiences and recognition but left room to improve for the upcoming concert season.

August 21st, 2017 was the day the solar eclipse crossed the United States. One area on the path was St. Joseph, Missouri. A solar eclipse is the event in which the moon passes across the sun. North Andrew was in totality which is when the entire sun is covered. This results in the sky going dark during the total coverage.
Many people were excited about the eclipse. St. Joseph was advertising the eclipse and it was said that St. Joseph would be super busy and the streets would be crowded. Some people paid large amounts of money to make sure they could see the eclipse with a good view.
The day did not go completely as planned. The clouds covered the sun for most of the day. During totality the school took students down to the football with special glasses for looking at the sun. During totality the clouds covered the sun, so the students could not see the sun. The students, staff, and community did get to see the area become very dark. The air was also affected during the total coverage. The temperature dropped a noticeable amount.
So many people were disappointed by not being able to see the sun on the total eclipse. Either way, students and teachers were able to see a few cool effects of the total solar eclipse.

Math is a subject that everyone needs, and North Andrew has a new curriculum that is being implemented this year. The new curriculum may hurt some and help others. This has been a big change for all students from Middle School to High School. Mrs. Black stated in class that; “ I do believe that some [students] will thrive. It will just take others a couple weeks of growing pains to warm up to this new idea.” A couple of students were asked how they were going to be affected by this change. Sophomore Jagger Lawrence stated that “ This new curriculum will help me keep my grades up, because I usually score better on tests. Middle School math teacher, Mr. Bryson, has stated that “ Homework does not count as a part of the final grade, however for you to retake the quiz you must complete the homework… The new structure is 25% quizzes, 25% Group Projects, and 50% final chapter tests.” and he also made the point that “These quizzes that are worth so much, you could take theme multiple times. This will help the students who don't understand it the first time around to do better on their second go through. Tests will always and still remain the same for the students when it comes to our math classes.”
