Hawaii Missile Crisis
By Tyler Schuman

On January 13th, 2018 an alert was sent out to the state of Hawaii. Hawaiians received
an alert about a ballistic missile incoming. The alert read, “BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.”
The state started to panic. Everyone was trying to reach out to their loved ones. Many people took shelter in bathrooms or any room they could find without windows. At Konawaena High school they were hosting a wrestling championship. They decided to move everyone to the center of the gym. It took 38 minutes in order for the state to inform them that the alert was a false alarm.
To many people this alert felt so real. North Korea and the United States have had tension for quite some time. Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un have been at each other several times. Earlier this year Kim Jong Un said “I have a nuclear button on the desk in my office. All of the mainland United States is within the range of our nuclear strike.” Donald Trump replied with “Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my button works.” So for many people they thought that Kim Jong Un finally decided to launch.
Experts say that a nuclear missile would of only taken about 12 minutes to reach Hawaii from North Korea, so many people were confused on how it took 38 minutes to inform people this was not real. The state said that this happened because of human error. Someone clicked on the wrong thing while sending out an alert. Many people do not believe in this explanation. A conspiracy is going around saying that this was on purpose. The government wanted to see how people would react in the situation of a nuclear strike.

Deadliest Mass Shooting in US History
By Maggie Grishow
October 18, 2017
On October 1, 2017, Steven Paddock shot into the crowd of a music festival from his hotel room balcony, killing 59 people and injuring 527 others. The horrific event has been labeled “the deadliest mass shooting in US history”, taking the place of the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando as the deadliest. When forces began closing in on Paddock, he took his own life. After the shooting, officers searched Paddock’s room and found 23 weapons, thousands of rounds of ammunition, and ingredients to make explosives. Many stories came flooding in of heroism, as strangers became each others hero’s to get people out. Blood banks were overflowing with people donating blood, and the Welcome to Las Vegas sign was surrounded by a cross for each victim. In total, 22,000 people fled from the gunman and carried out wounded in pickup trucks, cars, and taxi’s. Authorities have now brought in Paddock’s girlfriend to question her. Lots of people are now calling for stricter gun control laws in wake of this tragedy. Senator Bernie Sanders tweeted this 3 days after the shooting,“There is no reason for any civilian to own an automatic weapon.” Investigations into this attack are still ongoing.

Apple just announced it’s newest addition to their smartphone family, on the company’s tenth anniversary. The I phone 8 and I phone X photos were announced last week to mixed reviews. The I phone 8 has a smaller screen than the I phone X, but only the I phone X’s screen covers the entire front part of the phone. The I phone X is also a little bit taller than the I phone 8 but both phone’s share similar technological features.New features of the phones include: facial recognition, no home button, no headphone jack, and a new and improved Siri. Some people are excited about the new phone, especially the full frontal screen as well as the glass back. Others however are not excited about these two new phones, especially with the glass back making a comeback. The last I phone with a glass back was the I phone 4. North Andrew Sophomore Sean Houston said this about the new phones, “I don’t like the new I phones because they don't have a headphone jack.” When asking around about whether a few student would be buying a new i Phone the general consensus was no. A Lot of students also said that they were confused as to why there isn’t an I phone nine. Apple is said to have released the I phone 8 and the I phone X because it is the company's tenth anniversary, so they didn’t want a nine.

There have been multiple Natural Disasters recently. This includes multiple Hurricanes that have made landfall, along with an extremely devastating earthquake. The most destructive of the hurricanes to come through has been Harvey, it had the most destroyed buildings along with a moderate amount in it's death toll. Harvey was a category 4 with 5 being the strongest. It ran through Texas not slowing down until it hit Houston.Hurricane Irma, went through the Caribbean, and went through Florida. Hurricane Jose, went through the Caribbeans, and went through all of the islands without skipping a beat. Recently, hurricane Maria, has been tearing through Puerto Rico. Maria has been devastating so far.To go with the hurricanes, there has been an increase in earthquakes.
Mexico has seen two recent earthquakes that have rattled everyone, within a 100 mile radius, not just with aftershock but from the devastation that it has caused. Just outside of Atlixco, Puebla, Mexico an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 rattled old buildings until the crumbled. The death toll has already surpassed 200, and there are rescue teams still searching through the rubble.
On September 20th there was a stunning earthquake in Japan. The earthquake had a magnitude of 6.1 struck, 185 miles from Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. It could be felt through the entire nation of Japan. Recently our school had a disaster relief fundraiser “Hats for Houston”, where we raised nearly $400 for the American Red Cross. All of these natural disaster have been chaotic for the world, but we have been banding together in our time of need.

St. Louis BLM Protest

September 22, 2017
On Friday, September 15 a Missouri judge acquitted former St.Louis police Officer Jason Stockley. He was found not guilty of the shooting death of black motorist Anthony Lamar Smith in 2011. The event started when Stockley’s partner Brian Bianchi tried to arrest Smith for a suspected drug bust. They pulled up behind Smith, and Smith tried to back out. He hit the police car and sped away, Stockley can be seen firing his department issued handgun at Smith’s car. The chase ended when the SUV hit Smith’s car. Stockley fired his gun at Smith’s car, after he fired his gun he went back to his SUV to grab his first aid kit. But when he arrived at Smith’s car it was too late, he claimed to have seen a revolver in the passenger seat. However, the revolver did not have any of Smith’s DNA on it but it did have Stockely's DNA on it. Drugs were found in the car with Smith’s DNA on them. Judge Wilson Wrote “The gun was a full size revolver and not a small gun, such as a derringer, that can fit in the palm of one’s hand or into the side pocket of pants without being obvious,” Wilson wrote. “Stockley was not wearing a jacket; if he had such a gun in his possession it would have been visible on the cell phone video.” An estimate of 120 people were arrested on Sunday. The protests began peacefully and became violent after nightfall. The St.Louis Police Department were reportedly chanting “Whose Streets? Our Streets!”

Antifa Protest

Antifa stands for anti-fascism, fascism is the silencing of opposing viewpoints by using violence. Antifa originated in Germany during the reign of Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich. It was a movement that opposed Nazism, communism, and monarchy. It was founded by the Democratic Socialist of Germany to stop the fascism of the Nazis.
Today Antifa is an extreme Leftist group who shows up to right wing events to protest. There is nothing wrong with protesting, it is their first amendment right. Many of their protest however, have turned violent. Antifa dresses is all black from head to toe wearing bandannas and masks to hide their identity. Members of Antifa say the they believe property damage does not equate to actual violence.
When Milo Yiannopoulos a right-wing provocateur went to Berkley University to speak,Antifa showed up. Antifa started riots and began to damage property, and start fires. They caused more than $100,000 in property damage to Berkeley which is a public university. During President Trumps inauguration Antifa showed up to protest, they busted out windows of limousines outside of the inauguration.
The right uses these protest to label Antifa as an out of control enemies of free speech. Yet leftist have refused to denounce this group. Both the right and the left have criticized the methods of Antifa. A quote by Brian Levin a criminal justice professor at California State University said “Both are anti-establishments and socio-political entities that can radicalize constituents to violence…”
